NEW Fiscal Year Activity with Spending Detail UDR Data Source
The Fiscal Year Activity with Spending Detail dataset is a User-Defined Report (UDR) data source in Balance that combines endowment fund activity, market value, and spending policy data into a single, configurable report. It is designed to support the most common endowment reporting needs - fiscal year activity as of the last closed accounting period, spending analysis, and roll forward activity using the dates selected when running the report.
It replaces the need for multiple separate reports to answer questions like:
Estimated Spending to Actuals for customers requiring this level of detail (that don’t use our Expendable Fund Module)
How did our endowment funds perform this fiscal year compared to a specific date range?
What was distributed vs. reinvested across our portfolio?
Which funds are underwater, and what is their estimated spending for next year?
What are our true external transfers, net of reinvested distributions?
Key Capabilities
Side-by-Side Period Comparison
Every activity field is available for two date ranges simultaneously - the date range you select when running the report, and the full fiscal year to date. This means you can compare a single quarter’s performance against full-year progress in the same report row, without building two separate reports.
Transfers Clarity
Reinvested distributions flow through the system as transfers, which causes the Transfers total to look inflated. This data source separates them:
| Field Name | What it includes |
| Transfers | All transfer activity — consistent with the accounting ledger. |
| Transfers–Reinvest | The reinvested distribution amount only. |
| Transfers Less Reinvest | True external transfers only. Use this when reconciling transfer activity with your GL or external statements. |
Investment Performance Breakdown
In addition to the rolled-up investment performance totals, the data source exposes the individual components so users can report on each element separately.
Forward-Looking Spending
The Spending Estimated Amount – Next Fiscal Year field surfaces what the total projection for the coming year based on activity imported within Balance for tracking/ reporting this information. This is useful for pre-year budget planning and for communicating projected distributions to stakeholders before the new fiscal year opens.
Fiscal Year End Flexibility
The report derives its fiscal year start date automatically from the client’s configured fiscal year ending. Users select a Post Date; the system resolves the correct FY start. The data source works correctly for all fiscal year end configurations — calendar year, June 30, May 31, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Transfers total seem higher than expected?
Reinvested distributions are recorded as transfer transactions in the accounting system (they move value between funds). This inflates the Transfers total. Use Transfers Less Reinvest to see only true external transfer activity. Both fields are available so you can report on either view depending on the context.
The Fiscal Year fields always show the same date range regardless of what period I select. Is that correct?
Yes, by design. The Fiscal Year suffix fields are always scoped to the full fiscal year to date based on the last posting date, independent of the period you select. This lets you compare a specific period to the full year in one report
What is the difference between Investment Performance and Investment Performance and Expenses?
Investment Performance = Income + Realized Gains + Unrealized Gains + Investment Fees. Investment Performance and Expenses adds Admin Fees (Expenses) to that total. Use Investment Performance and Expenses when you want a single figure that includes all fee types.
Some funds show a Spending Estimated Reinvest amount but I expected full distribution. Why?
When a fund is underwater (market value below its historical gift threshold), the spending rule may reinvest some or all the calculated spending amount instead of distributing it. The Spending Estimated Reinvest field shows the reinvested portion. Ending MV Less HG will be negative for underwater funds.
Can I filter this report by fund type, department, or investment pool?
Yes. All profile fields are available as filter criteria in the UDR filter panel, including Fund Type, Department, Foundation/Campus, Investment Pool, Spending Rule, Restriction Code, and FASB Restriction. You can combine multiple filters and save them for reuse.
The Spending Estimated Amount Next Fiscal Year field shows $0 for some funds. Why?
This field is driven by the spending calculation for the next fiscal year period. If it shows zero, the fund may not yet have a spending calculation for the next period, or the fund’s spending rule has not generated an estimated amount. This is expected for funds in certain spending rule configurations or for funds added after the calculation run.
